No. 16 Cal Jumps To 12th After Round Three of NCAA Championships

AUBURN, Wash. - After struggling in the second round, No. 16 California shot a plus-four 292 Thursday at the NCAA Championships and was able to jump from a tie for 16th to 12th. The Bears' three-round score is 893 at the par 72, 6273-yard Washington National Golf Course, and they are only four strokes out of the top 10.

Cal is on track to improve upon its 19th-place showing in its inaugural 2001 appearance at the NCAA Championships. The third-round score of 292 was the best for all of the teams which teed off in the morning and Cal's best team score in its last 20 rounds of golf.

No. 7 Arizona's lead was whittled from six strokes to two Thursday after the Wildcats shot a 293, for a three-day total of 874. No. 5 Texas jumped from sixth to second after tying No. 1 Auburn for a third-round low of three-under 285 to sit at 876. No. 2 Duke is third at 877, behind the NCAA individual leader Virada Nirapathpongporn. She is at minus-nine 207 and has a three-stroke edge over Georgia's Summer Simons

Junior Vikki Laing and sophomore Sarah Huarte paced the Bears in the third round with scores of 72 after firing the team's highest scores yesterday at 80 and 78, respectively. Huarte leads Cal in the individual race in a tie for 27th at 222. Junior Ria Quiazon equaled her second round score of 74 in the third round and is tied for 47th at 224. Sophomore Claire Dury, who shot a 76 the last two days, improved to a 74 and is tied with Laing for 59th. Senior Anne Walker struggled with an 80 and is tied for 105th at 234.

Cal tees off the final round of the NCAA Championships tomorrow at 12:20 p.m.
