BERKELEY - Fourth-ranked California suffered its first home loss and first shutout of the season when Washington upset the Golden Bears, 2-0, in a Pac-10 Conference match on Friday afternoon at Edwards Stadium. Cal's record fell to 7-3-0 (1-1-0 Pac-10). Washington improved to 4-4-3 (1-0-2).
Washington outshot Cal, 18-16, but the Bears had the shot-edge early, outshooting the Huskies 8-3 through 19 minutes. Included in that run were three shots by Cal junior forward Andrew Wiedeman that Huskies goalkeeper Rylan Hawkins saved. Hawkins wound up with six saves for the game.
The Huskies collected their first goal in the 23rd minute, when Brad Keller sent a cross into the Cal box and Matt Van Houten scored with a diving header past Bears goalkeeper David Bingham. Washington led, 1-0, which marked the first time Cal has trailed at home this season.
Freshman goalie Robby Gogatz replaced Bingham in the 28th minute after his sophomore teammate suffered an injury. Bingham allowed the one goal and made zero saves in 27 minutes and 33 seconds of action.
Cal freshman midfielder Tony Salciccia forced Hawkins into a save in the 41st minute. Washington's Brent Richards shot wide 16 seconds from halftime, and the Huskies took their 1-0 lead into the break.
In the 54th minute, Keller was the goalscorer, finishing from about 30 yards out past a diving Gogatz. Casey Cunningham was credited with an assist for the Huskies.
Keller also had a 25-yard blast in the 58th minute that hit the post.
Cal had a pair of late chances to score. But senior forward Jeff Cosgriff's 75th-minute shot at an open net was headed away by a defender and Hawkins saved junior midfielder Demitrius Omphroy's long-range, curving shot in the 82nd minute.
Gogatz finished with three saves in 62 minutes and 27 minutes of play.
The Bears next host Pac-10 opponent Oregon State at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 11, at Edwards Stadium.
