Cal Opens NCAA Play With 1-0 Win Over Illinois State
May 19, 2006
ILLINOIS STATE HEAD COACH MELINDA FISCHER
"I thought we played a great ball game. You look at the lines across after the game its one run, four hits, no errors for Cal, no runs, four hits, no errors for Illinois State. I thought we had an opportunity and it just didn't go our way. I thought they took advantage of an opportunity and got that one run and held out for the rest of the game."
ILLINOIS STATE PITCHER STACY BIRK
"I felt pretty good out there, I felt like I was hitting my spots except for one pitch. I was just trying to hang in there. We are pretty fired up for Iowa. We are ready."
CALIFORNIA HEAD COACH Diane Ninemire
"I thought tonight was a tremendous game by two great teams with two good pitchers. Illinois State came out with a lot of hustle and they were very prepared to play tonight. My team was very focused the first inning. I really loved the way we came out and scored the first run."
(On Illinois State's Stacy Birk)
"I think with the mixes of her curveball, her screwball, her changes in speed, and our hitters were a little anxious tonight. I think that's an adjustment we're going to have to make tomorrow, is to be a little more relaxed, get the nerves out, get in deep, and go with the pitch."
"I don't know if there's anything more we're going to be able to do. I think she's (Ashley DeBuhr) a very good pitcher. She too has a good repertoire of pitches and keeps the batters off-balance. She's done an outstanding job all year for Nebraska."
