ATHENS, Ga. - Cal senior Raquel Kops-Jones, seeded No. 1 in the NCAA singles championships, lost to Miami's No. 6-seeded Megan Bradley, 6-3, 6-2, today in a quarterfinal match in the 2004 NCAA Women's Tennis Championships at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga. The loss ends the Cal career of one of the greatest tennis players in Golden Bear history.

Although earlier this season Kops-Jones defeated Bradley, 6-3, 6-3, in the first round of the ITA All-American tournament on Oct. 9, 2003, this time Bradley proved too tough to beat. Bradley entered the championships ranked the No. 4 player in collegiate tennis by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).

"I wasn't aggressive enough at the beginning of the match," said Kops-Jones. "I made a lot of errors at the net."

Last year at the NCAA championships, Kops-Jones also advanced as far as the singles quarterfinals before falling. The only Cal player to ever advance past the quarterfinals in the NCAA singles championship is former Golden Bear great Lisa Albano, who reached the finals in 1991.

Kops-Jones, the No. 1 ranked player in collegiate tennis, accomplished several firsts in Golden Bear history this season: she became the first African-American woman to win a major ITA singles title by winning the ITA All-American tournament to begin the season; she won the first Pac-10 women's singles championship in school history; she was the first Cal woman to win Pac-10 Player of the Year honors; and she was the first Cal player to be named the ITA National Senior Player of the Year. Kops-Jones ends her season with a 31-8 singles record and a 132-57 career record in singles competition.
