BERKELEY - The California men's soccer team advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament after two exciting scoreless overtime periods and a dramatic shootout victory over Santa Clara in front of a crowd of 1784 at Edwards Stadium Tuesday afternoon. Seventh-seeded Cal won the shootout 5-4.
The Bears are advancing to the round of 16 for the first time since 2002 and for just the second time in school history.
The game saw plenty of scoring opportunities with Santa Clara and Cal combining for 46 shots, including a variety of ricochets and close calls. Both teams were equally tough on defense, deflecting shots that came inside the penalty box.
Cal fought off several Santa Clara threats, which included 14 shots on goal. Cal's senior keeper Eric Kronberg recorded nine saves overall.
The game was decided by penalty kicks. Cal was 5-for-5 on their efforts. Santa Clara scored on their first four attempts. A fifth try by the Broncos sailed wide left, clinching the victory for the Bears.
"This week of training we worked on penalty kicks, that helped my confidence," said Kronberg. "As soon as penalty kicks came I thought we could win the game."
Cal advances to the next round with a 13-3-3 record while Santa Clara closes its season at 13-6-3.
The Bears play Wake Forest on Saturday, Nov. 26 at 1:30 p.m. at Edwards Stadium. Wake Forest defeated Old Dominion, 2-1, Friday evening.
Tickets for Saturday's game will be on sale Saturday at Edwards Stadium, beginning at 12:30 p.m., on the corner of Bancroft and Fulton.
