BERKELEY, Calif. - California senior Sarah Huarte, who claimed the NCAA women's golf title last Saturday, has won the 2003-04 Honda Collegiate Women's Sports Award for Golf, presented annually to the nation's top golfer.

"The honor is well deserved," said Cal head coach Nancy McDaniel. "It's going to a great athlete who has worked hard over the last four years. She attacked her weaknesses and the dedication paid off. She always has been a consistent golfer and has played at one of the top spots on our team throughout her career. Our program appreciates the recognition."

The other finalists were Oklahoma State's Karin Sjodin, the NCAA runner-up, and UCLA's Susie Matthews and Charlotte Mayorkas, who led the Bruins to the NCAA team title.

Huarte was selected by a nationwide vote among NCAA member schools and is now eligible for the Honda-Broderick Cup, which is awarded annually to the nation's outstanding woman athlete of the year. She looks to join swimmer Mary T. Meagher (1986-87) as the only Cal athletes to win the Honda-Broderick Cup, which dates back to 1976-77.

A product of Shingle Springs, Calif., Huarte is the first Cal golfer to win the Honda Award. USC's Mikaela Parmlid received the award last year on the heels of her victory at the 2003 NCAA Women's Golf Championships. Eight of the last 11 Honda Award honorees in golf have come from the Pac-10.

Huarte garnered Cal's first national title in women's golf by carding a 10-under-par 278 - an NCAA Championships record - May 18-22 at the Grand National Lake Course in Opelika, Ala. Sjodin finished one shot back (279), while Matthews was third (280) and Mayorkas took fourth (284). With the triumph, Huarte became the Golden Bears' only first team All-American in the program's nine-year history.

Huarte concluded the season with a school-record stroke average of 73.8. The three-time first team All-Pac-10 pick also holds or shares Cal's all-time bests for 18 (67), 36 (140), 54 (209) and 72 holes (278).

She was one of eight players selected to represent the United States in the 2004 Curtis Cup, set for June 12-13 in Merseyside, England.
