BERKELEY - Cal offensive lineman Aaron Merz will compete for the West in the 2006 East-West Shrine Game on Jan. 21. Merz is one of 19 Pac-10 players on the West roster and the only one from Cal. The West team will be coached by Texas A&M's Dennis Franchione.

Merz, a second-team All-Pac-10 honoree, completed his collegiate career in the Bears' 35-28 win over BYU in the Pioneer PureVision Las Vegas Bowl. The 6-4, 340-pound lineman started 10 of 12 games for the Bears in 2005 and finished second on the team in pancake blocks (9.5) and third in knockdowns (24).

The game, which will kick off at 5 p.m., will be held at the Alamodome in San Antonio after being played for 80 years in San Francisco.
