California Women's Water Polo Opens Season With Alumnae Match

BERKELEY, CA - The California women's water polo team will open its 1999 season with an alumnae match, set for Saturday, Feb. 6 at 1 p.m. at Spieker Aquatics Complex on the Cal campus.

The '99 Bears, who will be attempting the win the National Collegiate Championship after finishing second to UCLA in the national title match the past three seasons. Coach Peter Asch's squad, which finished 27-6 in 1998, will be led by senior captains Erin Kelley and Melanie vonHartitzsch, senior goalie Evi Schueller, juniors Colette Glinkowski and Heather Petri, and sophomore Beth Irwin.

Members of the alumnae team will include Karen Cook (1996-98), who was a third team All-American last year, and Lynn Wittstock, who graduated from Cal in 1985 and was a long time member of the U.S. National team.

The Bears will begin their regular season Feb. 12-14 at the UC San Diego Invitational.
