BERKELEY - The No. 12 California men's soccer team shut out No. 17 Oregon State, 2-0, Friday afternoon at Edwards Stadium. The Bears handed the Beavers its first Pac-10 loss of the season and improve to 9-2-1, 2-2-0 in the Pac-10, while Oregon State fell to 7-2-5, 3-1-0 in the Pac-10.
"It was a well played game by both teams," said head coach Kevin Grimes. "It was nice to finally play a game back home after so many games on the road."
Senior forward Calen Carr put the Bears ahead, 1-0, in the 29th minute when he scored his seventh goal of the season and what turned out to be the game-winning goal. Sophomore forward Javier Hil passed the ball to Carr, who was in the penalty area on the left side of the goal when he found the open net and sank the ball past Oregon State's keeper, Patrick Deenihan. Carr currently leads the Pac-10 in game-winning goals, with five for the season.
Less than 10 minutes later, senior midfielder Pieter Berger gave the Bears a comfortable 2-0 lead heading into halftime when he scored in the 37th minute. Sophomore midfielder Andrew Jacobson passed the ball down field to Berger. Berger dribbled down the right side of the field, past the Beaver defenders to score Cal's second goal, and insure the win for the Bears.
Cal put Oregon State's keeper to the test, taking 12 shots while the Beavers recorded only five. Carr tallied five shots for the Bears, while Deenihan made six saves.
Oregon State's Matt Bowman was issued a yellow caution card in the 68th minute for roughing Cal's keeper, Erik Kronberg. Kronberg recorded his fifth shutout of the season.
