LIVERMORE, Calif. - Sophomore Stacey Shearer came off the bench to tie a school record with three goals and junior Sarah Kaminsky added a pair of her own as the California women's soccer kicked off its 1998 campaign with an 8-0 dismantling of defending Mid-American Conference champion Northern Illinois in Saturday's second match of the Fourth Annual Cal Invitational at Robertson Sports Park.
Shearer's three goal outing was the most goals scored by a Golden Bear in a single contest since Erika Hinton netted a hat trick in a 4-0 victory over San Diego on Sept. 27, 1992.
Cal's eight-goal outburst Saturday night also tied a pair of school records: most goals in a match and largest margin of victory. Ironically, the last time Cal scored an 8-0 shutout was 13 years ago to the day when the Bears defeated Long Beach State on Sept. 5, 1985.
In all, five Bears found the back of the NIU net, including sophomore Natalie Stuhlmueller, who blasted the game-winner from the top of the penalty box 19 minutes into the match off an assist from Stacey Mallison.
For the match, Cal outshot NIU, 24-3, as sophomore goalkeeper Maite Zabala recorded her third career shutout.
Both team will return to action at the Cal Invitational on Sunday, with Northern Illinois taking on Stanford at 5 p.m. and California squaring off with San Diego in the nightcap at 7 p.m.
