SAN DIEGO - Full Results

Taking on the No. 1 boat in the country, California men's crew took second in the varsity eight grand final behind top-ranked Harvard Sunday at the San Diego Crew Classic. The Crimson prevented the Golden Bears from winning a fourth straight Copley Cup.

Despite taking second, Cal head coach Mike Teti was extremely pleased, not only with how well the varsity eight raced, but how all of the Cal boats raced on Sunday.

"I was really happy with the way everyone performed today," Teti said. "Harvard is the top team in the country, but our guys hung in there with them. We led until the halfway point and then they passed us, but our guys hung in there with them through difficult conditions."

Harvard posted a time of 6:17.8 to Cal's 6:20.6.

Cal's junior varsity eight and freshman eight boats were both victorious in their finals. The JV "A" boat topped Harvard by over two seconds, 6:19.2-6:21.9. Taking third was the Bears' "B" boat (6:29.4).

The freshman eight blew past the competition, beating second-place Gonzaga to the finish line by over 20 seconds.

"We raced a lot better today," Teti said. "We were much more effective from the start. Had we raced today like we did yesterday, it would have been ugly. I'll give our guys an overall grade of an A today."

In addition to the way Cal raced today, Teti wanted to give thanks to all of the Cal alumni who came out to support the Bears this weekend. Teti said the support from the alums in San Diego was so strong that it almost made it feel like a home event for the Bears.

"It's such a huge event down here, and the support that we had from all of the alums down here was outstanding," Teti said. "I think our guys could sense that strong support. We had an opportunity this week to showcase what we're capable of, and I think we did that."

Cal has next week off before competing in the Stanford Invitational on Saturday, April 14.
