BERKELEY - Andrew Wiedeman was involved in every California goal - scoring one and assisting on two others - in the No. 11 Golden Bears' 3-1 victory over Cal Poly on Sunday at Edwards Stadium in the final game of the 13th annual Cal Legacy Classic. The Bears' record now stands at 3-1-0. The Mustangs' record fell to 0-4-0.
Wiedeman, a junior forward, put Cal on the scoreboard first when he scored from a tough angle at the 15:02 mark off an assist from Cosgriff. The Bears led, 1-0.
Cal's All-America forward returned the favor when he and Jimenez combined to assist on Cosgriff's goal at 34:12. Cosgriff scored from close range to give Cal a 2-0 lead, which the Bears took into halftime.
At 65:46, after a Cal foul in the Cal Poly box, Mustangs defender Daniel Gray converted a penalty kick to cut the lead to one at 2-1.
The tight game featured 25 fouls and five yellow cards.
Jimenez gave Cal some breathing room when he scored at 70:43 off a Wiedeman cross. Cal led, 3-1.
The Mustangs took three more shots, but all missed the mark including an effort by Chris Gaschen that went wide.
Cal returns to action on Thursday, Sept. 17, when the Bears play San Francisco at the Dons' Negoesco Stadium as part of the Bay Area Classic. That game is slated to start at 7 p.m. The Bears play their last game of the tournament when they host Santa Clara at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 20, at Edwards Stadium.
