Below are selected quotes from head coach Jeff Tedford from the press conference heading into the Big Game against Stanford. Cal will host the Cardinal at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 23 in Memorial Stadium.
What are your thoughts entering your first Big Game
I know our players are looking forward to it very much. Even being here a short time ... I do understand the importance of the game for the alumni and for the university. I think Coach (Buddy) Teevens and I have both been very well schooled on what's about to take place. I am looking forward to it. I understand it's really big. I'm excited to be affiliated with Cal and to be a part of this and I am looking forward to a great week of preparation for Stanford. Today, I got a chance to watch them on tape. They are a quality, quality football team. A much better team than their record indicates. They are very physical and play very, very hard. So we are going to have to play our best to beat them.
Have you ever been a part of a great rivalry like this?
You know, really the only one to this magnitude that I have been associated with is the Civil War at Oregon-Oregon State. I will have to tell you that my impression of this rivalry is that it is more civil than the one at Oregon-Oregon State. I am impressed by how there are a lot of Stanford and Cal people who are associates in business, and it seems to be a very healthy friendly rivalry at least from what I can tell so far. I am very excited to see the ticket sales. I know there is going to be a great turnout and it's going to be a great atmosphere. It seems like it's going to be a very healthy.
Have you had a chance to see the Axe at all?
Yeah, I did. Buddy and I had to do a photo shoot over at Stanford and I saw the Axe. They were guarding it very well and I was hardly allowed to even touch it. But it was pretty much as Buddy described. The two people who were guarding it didn't want me anywhere near it.
