BERKELEY, Calif. - The University of California women's tennis team assistant coach Rogelio "Jun" Hernandez was named the Northwest Region ITA Assistant Coach of the Year, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced last week.
Hernandez, who is in his third year with the squad, assisted head coach Jan Brogan in coaching the No. 12 team in the nation. Cal finished 2002 with a 14-10 record, and a Round of 16 appearance at the NCAA Championships. In addition, four netters earned berths at the NCAA Individual Championships, four finished the season ranked in the ITA's top 65 in single and two pairs in doubles, and two players were named All-Pac-10.
Hernandez, a San Diego State graduate, spends his summers as a hitting coach for professional tennis player Martina Hingus. As the top assistant at University of San Diego three years ago, Hernandez played an instrumental role in guiding then Torero junior Zuzana Lesenarova to the 1999 NCAA singles title.
