Cal Chancellor Robert Berdahl and Athletic Director John Kasser announced today they had convinced Golden Bear head football coach Tom Holmoe to agree to a one-season extension to his existing contract. The new agreement would extend his contract through the end of the 2002 football season.

Holmoe has expressed reticence in formally agreeing to a contract extension that has been on the table for the past season, saying he preferred the timing to coincide with improvement in the win-loss column. While he has continued to put on hold an offer from the school for a longer-term extension, he agreed this week to do a single-year extension.

"I didn't feel this was necessary because I hope to be at Cal for a long time. I also understand that everyone wants success for the program, and I am accountable for that, and I sincerely believe in postponing any rewards until we have that success. However, the administration felt this was a symbol of their commitment to our program. For this gesture, I am grateful."

Berdahl indicated he was pleased to be able to convince Holmoe to agree to an extension. "Tom Holmoe is the type of person and the type of coach we want here at the University of California," said Berdahl. "We believe in him and the direction of our football program and felt it was appropriate to announce this extension as a firm show of support entering the season."

Kasser said he has been working on Holmoe for a long time to sign a contract extension. "I want to be very clear in my support of Tom Holmoe and my belief that he's the one to continue building our football program," said the Cal Athletic Director. "I finally was able to convince Tom to agree to this extension so that there is no uncertainty. I'm truly excited about the foundation Tom and his staff have put together. I believe we have one of the top young teams in the Pac-10 and have created a base that is going to show great results on the field over the next several seasons."

Kasser indicated his next task was to convince Holmoe to sign an even longer contract extension. "Tom has a mindset that he should be rewarded as the team begins to show improvement in the win-loss column and I respect his integrity. However, I believe in having stability and I believe Tom is the right person for our head coaching position at Cal. We'll keep talking and when he feels the timing is right, I'm sure we'll work out an even longer agreement."
