DELHI, India - Former California star Lauren Boyle placed seventh in the 200-meter freestyle on the first day of the 2010 Commonwealth Games' long-course competition on Monday at the Dr. S.P. Mukherjee Swimming Stadium. Swimming for her native New Zealand, Boyle posted a time of 1:58.96 in the championship final.
Boyle is also slated to compete in the 400-meter freestyle and the 800-meter freestyle relay at Delhi 2010.
The erstwhile Bear wrapped up her college career last spring as a key member of Cal's third-place squad at the 2010 NCAA Championships and as the school record holder in the 1650-yard freestyle (15:56.93). She claimed All-America honors in the 500-yard freestyle, 1650 free and 800-free relay and garnered honorable mention All-America accolades in the 200 free at the national meet. In the 2010 Pac-10 Championships, Boyle won the 500-free crown.
Boyle's time (4:37.18) in the 500 at NCAAs moved her into second place on Cal's all-time fastest list for that event. Her personal-best time in the 200-free preliminary race (1:45.64) at NCAAs made her Cal's eighth-fastest Bear in that event.
She earned a spot on the Pac-10 All-Academic second team last season.
The current Golden Bears (1-0) return to the pool in the Oct. 15 Stanford Invitational. The Cal swimmers and divers open up the home schedule on Oct. 16, when they host Texas at Spieker Aquatics Complex.
