(BERKELEY) - Bryan Anger will be honored with the College Football Performance Awards Elite Punter Trophy during a presentation at halftime of the Cal-San Jose State men's basketball game at Haas Pavilion on Wednesday, Dec. 7. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. PT.

Anger has had yet another banner season in 2011 for the Bears in his fourth campaign as the team's starting punter. For each of the past three seasons (2009-11), he has earned first-team all-conference honors and also captured the J. Scott Duncan Award as the team's Most Valuable special teams player. Anger is one of only four players in the history of Cal football to be named first-team all-conference for three consecutive seasons. He is averaging 44.57 yards per punt in 2011 to rank third in the Pac-12 and 12th nationally for those with the NCAA's minimum number of punts per game. His 2011 average is also fifth on Cal's all-time single-season list and has improved his career average to 43.54 yards per punt, second on Cal's all-time list. He earned an honorable mention spot on Phil Steele's 2011 midseason All-American squad.

"As my time wraps up here at Cal, it is truly an honor to be named the CFPA Elite Punter for my performance over the past two seasons," Anger said. "I look forward to finishing off the season strong in San Diego. Go Bears!"

The 2011 CFPA Elite Punter Trophy is given in recognition of the top punting performance in the nation over the past two seasons at the Football Bowl Subdivision level. Recipients of the College Football Performance Awards are selected exclusively based upon objective scientific rankings of the extent to which individual players increase the overall effectiveness of their teams. In Berkeley on Wednesday to present Anger with the award is College Football Performance Awards Executive Director Brad Smith.

"I want to congratulate Bryan Anger, the recipient of our 2011 Elite Punter Trophy," Smith said. "He earned the honor with his on-field performance, which was significantly higher than any other punter in the nation in the last two seasons."

Cal (7-5, 4-5 Pac-12) will play Texas (7-5, 4-5 Big 12) in the Holiday Bowl at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego in a contest to be nationally televised on ESPN and ESPN3 on Wednesday, Dec. 28 (5 p.m. PST). Cal is bowl eligible for the ninth time in the last 10 seasons and will be playing in a bowl game for the eighth time in the last nine campaigns. The Bears are also assured of a winning record in 2011 for the ninth time in the last 10 campaigns. Cal finished fourth in the highly competitive North division of the Pac-12 Conference and was selected for a bowl prior to any of the teams from the conference's South division.

Cal finished its 2011 regular-season schedule by winning three of its final four games, with the only loss coming narrowly on the road at the hands of a Stanford team that finished the regular season at No. 4 in the BCS Standings, as well as the AP Top 25 and USA Today Poll.
