Berkeley -

Following a vote by the Cal football team earlier this week, four players were named the official captains for the 1998 season.

Head coach Tom Holmoe had previously selected game captains for each of the games this season. However, he had the team vote on two offensive and two defensive team captains earlier this week.

The captains on offense are senior offensive tackle John Welbourn and senior wide receiver Dameane Douglas. Defensively, the '98 captains are junior linebacker Sekou Sanyika and senior linebacker Matt Beck.

In other Cal news, it appears that freshman offensive guard Brandon Ludwig has recovered sufficiently from a shoulder injury that kept him out of the second half of the Arizona game last week, and would start on Saturday against Stanford. The coaching staff also announced that senior wide receiver Bruce Pierre would get the starting nod over junior Joel Young.

The Cal-Stanford game will be televised live by KGO-TV (Channel 7) in the San Francisco Bay Area. It will be replayed on Fox Sports Bay Area beginning at 12 midlight later the same day and again at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday. It will also be re-broadcast on Wednesday, Nov. 25 at 1:00 p.m.

The weekly Cal Football Highlight Show will be devoted mainly this week to the start of the 1998-99 Golden Bear basketball season as the football game will be replayed in its entirety just one-half hour later on Fox Sports Bay Area.
