Final Stats

The No. 9 California women's swimming team (8-2, 4-1) defeated No. 13 UCLA, 157.5-142.5, Saturday afternoon at Spieker Aquatics Complex in Berkeley.

The Golden Bears and Bruins battled throughout the meet, but Cal pulled out the win after taking the final race of the day-the 200 free relay. Overall, the Bears won 11 of the day's 16 events and reeled off five victories in a row to start the meet.

Both junior Natalie Coughlin and senior Staciana Stitts won three individual events to help bolster Cal's score. Coughlin won the 100 back (52.55), 100 free (48.65) and 100 fly (51.96), while Stitts came in first in the 100 breast (1:00.80), 200 breast (2:13.52) and tied for first in the 200 IM (2:03.65). Coughlin (backstroke) and Stitts (breaststroke) were also a part of Cal's victorious 200 medley relay (1:41.50) team. Junior Natalie Griffith (butterfly) and senior Michelle Harper (freestyle) were also members of that winning quartet.

Freshman Kate Tiedeman put in a strong performance in the meet's second event of the day, coming away with a win in the 1000 free (10:02.53). Sophomore Lauren Medina followed Tiedeman's lead, placing first in the 200 free (1:50.07) in the third event of the meet.

Freshman Helen Silver continues to be a bright spot for the Bears, and won the 200 back in the field's only sub-two minute time (1:59.98). Impressive runner-up finishes for the Bears included junior Danielle Becks' second-place showing in the 50 free (23.57) and sophomore Marcelle Miller's second-place finish in the 200 breast (2:17.07).

On the diving side, senior Christina Flynn finished third in both the one-meter (234.225) and three-meter (255.45) competitions.

The Bears conclude their regular season at home versus Stanford, Saturday, February 15 at 12 p.m. Cal hosts the Pac-10 Women's Swimming Championships Feb. 27-Mar. 1 in Federal Way, Wash.
