BERKELEY, Calif. - With four returning starters from last year's NCAA Tournament team, California was tabbed to place third in the 2007-08 Pac-10 Conference season, according to a poll of media members who cover women's basketball.
This is the highest Cal has ever been picked in the conference in the preseason by the media, with the previous best being fourth in 2006-07. The Bears finished a program all-time best of third in the Pac-10 last season, equaling the school's best-ever Pac-10 mark of 12-6.
In 2007-08, Stanford was chosen as the team to beat with 179 points and 17 first-place votes. Arizona State came in second with 154 points and one first-place vote, while California placed third with 150 points. USC was picked to finish fourth with 117 points, while Washington grabbed 101 points to place fifth, and UCLA took sixth-place with a total of 98 points. The Bruins were followed by Oregon (74), Arizona (53), Oregon State (43) and Washington State (21).
California, led by Pac-10 Coach of the Year Joanne Boyle and Pac-10 Player of the Year Devanei Hampton, finished with a 23-9 overall record last season while advancing to its second straight NCAA Tournament appearance.
Stanford finished 29-5 overall and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament last season in its 20th straight appearance. This is the eighth-straight year that Stanford has been picked by the media as the conference preseason favorite.
Four Pac-10 teams qualified for NCAA postseason Tournament play in 2006-07, marking the fourth consecutive season that four or more Conference teams have advanced to the tournament.
The results of the preseason all-conference team will be released Tuesday, Oct. 30.
