Golden Bear Alumni Update: Haley Cope Wins 100 Back at National Championships

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.-- - Former University of California star Haley Cope won the 100-long course meter backstroke at the 2003 ConocoPhillips Spring National Championships in a time of 101.37, Friday. The championships were held at the IUPUI Natatorium in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Cope was the 2000 Pacific-10 Conference Swimmer of the Year. In recent competition, Cope turned in a then-personal best time 1:01.74 performance in the 100 back at the 2002 Pan Pacific Games in Yokohama, Japan to earn a bronze medal. At the 2001 World Championships in Fukouka, Japan, Cope was the world champion in the 50m back (28.51). At the 2001 U.S. National Championships she was victorious in the 50m free (25.48), edging out 10-time Olympic medallist Jenny Thompson (25.55).
