BERKELEY - California head coach Mike Montgomery
On both teams' offenses:
"The guys moved the ball around and were unselfish; 22 assists was good. The team was aware of who needed to have the ball and getting it to them. We knew that Washington State was not as strong inside. They offset that by their offense and spacing, making it difficult to defend them. Going inside was a big plus for us, and kicking it out was helpful. We didn't necessarily space the court as much as we wanted, but we did knock down some shots to discourage the double. With a guy like Klay Thompson, he can really shoot the ball. We tried some things on him and they didn't really work. They got a little stagnant in offense just looking for Klay. We didn't do that, Crabbe had 30, but we kept moving the ball."
On defending Klay Thompson in overtime:
"In overtime, we tried the box and one on Klay and they ended up standing around a little bit. He had to be getting tired; he was running everywhere to get shots. Brandon did a great job on him. We were able to get up by six. It bought us just enough time that there wasn't enough time left."
On Allen Crabbe:
"Allen Crabbe is a good player. He is growing into his role. He understands it's okay to miss a shot. He knows he can shoot it, and the players on the team know he is a good shooter. he players on the team are good at getting him the ball. I just think as things have evolved, it is clearer what people's jobs are. Allen isn't going to do this every night, but if you don't guard him, he is capable of making shots."
Sophomore Guard Brandon Smith
On tonight's game:
"Coming back from the road, a lot of guys are really tired. A lot of the starters put in a lot of minutes in Arizona. This week we were just trying to recuperate, knowing Reggie Moore, Klay Thompson and a great group of guys were coming in. We knew this game would come down to toughness. We knew we had it, and tonight, we were the tougher team."
On defending Klay Thompson:
"It was a box and one. Jorge and some other guys played box and one during the game. In overtime, I had some fresher legs, so I was able to chase him about. We got Washington State confused and it bought us some time."
Freshman Guard Allen Crabbe
On his night offensively:
"Having these kinds of stats are good, but getting this type of win with my teammates is better. I was so excited after this win. We all played together, we played hard. My teammates were just finding me in the right place at the right time. When they double the post, we just get it to the outside. The post guys were just finding me in the right places so I could get these shots off."
On Klay Thompson:
"You have to give it to Brandon and Jorge. They did a wonderful job on Klay. He did score 36, but he wasn't taking them off the dribble. Basically, he is a big-time player, and this was one of his nights. In overtime, Brandon did a great job shutting him down so he didn't take a shot. He is more experienced than me; he knows how to work his way off screens, but I'll just play my game. The big guys and the guards will find me and I'll make my shots."
