OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - Three California Golden Bears reached the final of the three-meter springboard at the NCAA Zone E Diving Regional, with freshman Sam Helvie taking 14th to lead Cal on Thursday at Oklahoma City Community College. Cal sophomore teammate Javier Rivas was 15th and sophomore teammate Mark Wes was 18th.
A product of Bakersfield, Calif., Helvie scored 528.30, Rivas scored 525.30 and Wes scored 466.70 in the final. Arizona State senior Joona Puhakka won the three-meter board with 879.95 points. At the end of the regional on Saturday, the top eight men's divers will qualify for the 83rd annual NCAA Men's Swimming & Diving Championships March 23-25 in Atlanta, Ga.
Helvie rebounded from the earlier preliminary, in which he finished 16th (242.55).
"It was a great experience for a young team," Cal coach Ron Kontura said. "Mar Wes making the final along with Javier and Sam was great for the program. Sam struggled in the first round and put it together in the second round. I'm really happy with how we've performed."
Day two of the three-day event begins tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. CST. The women will take part in the three-meter final and the men in the one-meter final.
