FEDERAL WAY, Wash. - Third-ranked California won one relay and placed second in another to tie sixth-ranked Arizona for first place after the first day of the 2006 Pac-10 Men's Swimming Championships on Wednesday night at the Weyerhauser King County Aquatics Center. The Golden Bears tied the Wildcats with 74 points after winning the 200-yard medley relay and finishing behind Arizona in the 800-yard freestyle relay. Arizona took second in the 200-medley relay.

In the first race of the conference championships, the Cal quartet of David Russell, Henrique Barbosa, Jernej Godec and Milorad Cavic won the 200-medley relay in an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 1:25.44. The Bears foursome of Dominik Meichtry, Garrett Wagner, Louis Vayo and Miguel Molina took second place in the 800-freestyle relay in a school-record and NCAA automatic qualifying time of 6:21.02. Arizona's A squad won the race in a Pac-10 meet record time of 6:18.70.

"We swam great," Cal coach Nort Thornton said. "That was about as good as we could hope for. Both relays we were worried about. To win the medley was a big one, and then the 800 was a big swim for us to set a school record. It's just one day out of four but it's a good way to start off. We're hoping it carries over."

The second day of the Pac-10 Championships begins at 11 a.m. tomorrow, Thursday, with preliminary races. Thursday's action will feature preliminaries for the 500 freestyle, 200 individual medley and 50 freestyle. At 6 p.m. the finals of the 500 freestyle, 200 individual medley, 50 freestyle and 200 freestyle relay will be contested. The Pac-10 Championships continue through Saturday.
