Sept. 5, 2008
BERKELEY - The fifth-ranked California men's soccer team won its third match in a row to start the 2008 season at the first day of the Cal Legacy Classic, defeating Cornell, 5-0, Friday afternoon at Edwards Stadium. The Golden Bears (3-0) have scored nine goals in the first three games of the season.
Just like in the home opener on Aug. 29, Cal didn't wait very long to get on the scoreboard. In the eighth minute, senior Pat Marion collected his second goal of the campaign when he deflected a shot from junior Imaan Kerchgani past the keeper. The Bears would score once more in the first half when junior Jacob Wilson got behind the defense, after receiving a nice pass into the box from sophomore Andrew Wiedeman, and blasted a shot off the post and into the net. Sophomore Hector Jimenez also earned an assist on the goal.
Sophomore Davis Paul put the game away for the Bears in the second half. Paul scored twice with fellow sophomore Servando Carrasco getting the assist on both scores. The first goal came when Paul gathered the rebound from a shot by Carrasco and was able to shoot the ball past the keeper, who was out of position. Paul's second score came when Carrasco delivered a downfield pass to Paul, and he was able to get past the defense and beat the keeper for the second time.
Cal's fifth goal came during a scramble in the box. Wiedeman heel kicked a pass to sophomore A.J. Soares, and Soares was able to score his first collegiate goal.
Junior keeper Stefan Frei was perfect once again, recording his second shutout of the season and making four saves over the course of the match.
The Bears outshot Cornell 21-7 and forced seven corner kicks to just one for Cornell.
The Bears will host No. 7 SMU in a battle of top-10 squads Sunday, Sept. 7, at 2:30 p.m. at Edwards Stadium. The Mustangs (3-0) defeated Stanford, 2-0, in the first match of the Cal Legacy Classic.
