CAMDEN, N.J. - The Golden Bears won four of their five races today, qualifying six of its seven boats to IRA grand finals and one to IRA petite finals. As a result, Cal will have six crews racing for national championships - the freshman four with coxswain, varsity pair, open four with coxswain, varsity four with coxswain, varsity four without coxswain, freshman eight and varsity eight.
The freshman four with coxswain won their semifinal race today. The Bears (6.34.33) defeated Princeton (6:40.2) with an open water margin. Wisconsin A (6:45.52), Wisconsin B (6:49.23), Yale (6:53.79) and Navy (6:58.12) rounded out the field.
The second varsity eight race proved to be a tough one for Cal. Washington defeated the Bears with a time of 5:56.33 to Cal's 5:59.57. Cornell, Holy Cross and Temple finished at 6:02.51, 6:12.16 and 6:19 respectively. The Bears will race in the petite final at 12:54 p.m.
The varsity eight advanced to Saturday's grand final, finishing second in their semifinal. Yale (5:45.88) edged out the Bears (5:46.4). Harvard finished third at 5:49.52, also advancing to the grand final.
California's freshman eight finished in first place in their semifinal. The Bears (5:50.52) defeated Penn (5:53.48) and Princeton (5:55.73). Cal will race in the grand final, looking to win a third consecutive IRA Championship.
Tomorrow will feature six grand finals featuring Cal boats. The Bears' freshman four with coxswain will race at 9:38 a.m. Cal's varsity pair will race at 10:02 a.m. At 10:26 a.n. the Cal open four with coxswain will race. The varsity four with coxswain will race at 10:50 a.m. The coxless varsity four will race at 11:14 a.m. The freshman eight will race at 12:42 p.m. The varsity eight will close out the day of grand finals at 2:00 p.m.
