Las Vegas, Nev. - The unbeaten California Golden Bears continued their opening season run of good play with wins over Notre Dame and UNLV to open the UNLV Tournament. Cal has opened the season in fine fashion with eight consecutive wins in hope of reaching its third consecutive NCAA Championship game.
Against Notre Dame, Kelly Anderson took the hill looking for her fourth win. She allowed one run through seven complete innings, walking one and striking out six. Catcher Haley Woods supplied all the offense Cal would need with a sacrifice fly and an RBI single scoring Vicky Galindo and Lindsay James, respectively.
Anderson scattered seven hits, allowing a run in the sixth. With the 2-1 win, she improved her record to 4-0 on the season.
In the nightcap against host UNLV, the Bears exploded from the plate in the fifth and sixth innings. Cal put consecutive five run innings together for the first time this season and scored a season high 12 runs to defeat the Running Rebels 12-0. UNLV was hurt by five errors that opened the flood gates and turned a close game into a rout.
Galindo scored three runs and Woods added three RBI, giving her a team high five on the day. All that offense came in support of Kristina Thorson. Looking to join Anderson with four wins, Thorson pitched five shutout innings, striking out seven and allowing two hits, before giving way to Sarah Adams for mop-up duty.
Cal will face ranked foes for the first time tomorrow. The Bears take on No. 14 LSU at 11 a.m. and No. 12 DePaul at 4 p.m.
