Men's Golf Heads to NCAA West Regional

BEARS TRAVEL TO TEMPE: The 41st-ranked California men's golf team will be making its fifth appearance this decade in NCAA competition when the Golden Bears head to Tempe, Ariz., for the 1998 NCAA West Regional, May 14-16.

THE TOURNAMENT: The tournament, which will take place at Arizona State's Karsten Golf Course (Par-72, 7,037 yards), will feature 18 teams and three individuals selected by the NCAA Golf Committee from District 7 and 8. Championship play will consist of 54 holes, with 18 holes played each of the tournament's three days.

THE STAKES: The top nine teams as well as the top two individuals not on one of those nine teams will advance to the NCAA Championship, May 27-30 in Albuquerque, N.M., at the Championship Golf Course. Last year, Pepperdine earned the ninth and final advancing spot at the NCAA West Regional in Santee, Calif. The Waves then went on to capture the 1997 NCAA Championship.

THE FIELD: Eleven Top 50 teams will be among the 18 participating schools in this year's NCAA West Regional. The squads selected from District 8 are: No. 1 UNLV, No. 4 Arizona, No. 13 Arizona State, No. 20 UCLA, No. 25 USC, No. 35 Washington, No. 41 California, Pacific, Oregon, New Mexico State, UC-Irvine and UC-Santa Barbara. Stanford's Joel Kribel was picked as the individual. From District 7, the six teams are: No. 17 Colorado State, No. 22 New Mexico, No. 23 Brigham Young, No.19 Texas-El Paso, Nevada and Fresno State. The two individuals chosen from District 7 are James Stewart of San Diego State and Jarrod Warner of Boise State.

THE SCHEDULE: Following registration on Wednesday, May 13, a practice round will be held at Karsten. Championship play will officially begin with Thursday's first round. Tee times are set at 8 a.m. from the No. 1 and 10 holes. The second and third rounds will be played Friday and Saturday, respectively, also beginning with 8 a.m. tee times from the No. 1 and 10 holes.

THE LINEUP: Head Coach Steve Desimone has selected the following players to represent Cal in the 1998 NCAA West Regional.

HEAD COACH STEVE DESIMONE: Steve Desimone is in his 19th season as the head coach of the Golden Bears. Desimone, a 1970 Cal graduate and former member of the basketball team, led the Bears to a sixth-place finish in the Pac-10 last season. He has now guided Cal to five NCAA West Regionals ('90, '93, '95, '97, '98) as well as an appearance in the 1995 NCAA Championship, when the Bears finished sixth. Since Desimone has been at the helm, the golf program has produced three All-Americans.
