PALOS VERDES, Calif. - No. 4 California opened the spring season by shooting a team score of 304 Monday in the first round of the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge. The Golden Bears are in sixth with two rounds to play at the Palos Verdes Golf Club.
Behind Charlotte Mayorkas' minus-five 66, No. 3 UCLA leads the pack with a plus-two 286. New Mexico is in second, but 13 shots back at 299, while South Carolina is third at 302. No. 5 Arizona and No. 13 Ohio State, the host of the tournament, are tied for fourth at 303.
Senior Claire Dury led Cal with a 72 Monday and is tied for fifth. Sophomore Sophia Sheridan is tied for 12th with a 74, and senior Anna Temple is tied for 32nd with a 77. Senior Sarah Huarte, a preseason second team All-American, struggled today, shooting an 81 to tie for 56th. Freshman Danielle Nash also had a tough day on the links, sharing 70th with an 84, but luckily the Bears were able to drop her score towards the team total.
New Mexico's Kailin Downs finds herself second behind Mayorkas with a 70.
