Quotes from Cal's 2-1 Loss to Virginia in the Third Round of the College Cup
Nov. 18, 2006
California head coach Kevin Grimes:
"I'd like to say congratulations to Virginia. Thanks for a great game and being great hosts for the event. It's a well-deserved win for them. They played very well throughout the match. In the second half, they took their chances. We fought very hard until the end, but we couldn't slip one in.
"I just think we wanted to do the best we could in terms of execution and we had a good feeling going into the game. We had a one-goal lead going into the half. We knew we had to battle for 45 minutes in the second half to get the victory. Like I said, Virginia did a good job attacking and ultimately winning it.
California goalkeeper Justin Meyers
On the second goal:
"I was just trying to get the attack going. That obviously wasn't the right move. But we fought hard, and hat's off to Virginia for taking it to us."
Virginia head coach George Gelnovatch:
"I can't remember a playoff game where we were down. Actually I can think of one, in 10 years where we came back in that fashion, stayed with it and played as a team."
On what he said at halftime:
"At halftime when you're down a goal, part of your talk will be motivational. I think we were disappointed that we were losing. We created a lot of chances, the quality of such that we should have had a goal. We were obviously disappointed to be at home and down a goal. I think we just turned the dials up."
On defensive strategy:
"One of the things we wanted to do was to have their forwards come back to the ball and receive it. I think our defenders did a good job in making them feel uncomfortable. In turn, that locked them into their half a little bit and helped to create some chances for us."
On that first goal:
"Once we scored the first goal, a huge burden was lifted off of our shoulders. I looked at the clock and there was 30 minutes left. I turned to my staff and said there's no way we're not going to score."
Virginia goalkeeper Ryan Burke
On making the quarterfinals:
"It feels great. Obviously. I really want to avenge the loss two years ago in the quarterfinals at home. So I'm really looking forward to the next game."
After UVa took the lead:
"I was just hoping that we would hang on. I give credit to our guys for fighting hard and being able to hang on."
