Bears Face Tough Test at MPSF Championships

The ninth-ranked California men’s gymnastics team faces its biggest test yet at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation’s (MPSF) Men’s Gymnastics Championship. The Bears will meet No. 2 Oklahoma, No. 4 Stanford and No. 11 Air Force in their first postseason matchup, Saturday at the United States Air Force Academy’s Cadet Gym in Colorado Springs, Colo.
The MPSF Championship will help gauge Cal’s readiness for NCAA individual and team competitions. In the Bears’ regular-season finale, Cal took down defending national champion Illinois 427.000-425.650. California claimed at least a share of a Top 3 finish in five of the six events as well as the all-around. The Cal still rings team set a season-high of 72.150, led by senior Steven Lacombe’s first-place 15.150. Freshman Takahiro Kawada posted the winning pommel horse (15.150) score, while Lacombe and freshman Kyle Zemeir shared the vault title (15.050). Sophomore John Liu claimed the parallel bars and freshman Kevin Wolting the top all-around (84.200).
Cal won its lone MPSF title in 1998.
