SALINAS, Calif. - Coming off a first-place finish at its own Bay Area Classic last week, the 17th-ranked California women's golf team picked up where it left off in the first of three rounds of the Spartan Invitational Monday at Corral de Tierra Country Club. The Golden Bears fired a 289 to lead No. 22 Pepperdine by five strokes (294).
"The team was anxious to play this week against a strong field," said Cal head coach Nancy McDaniel, the 2001 Pac-10 Coach of the Year. "The win at Hiddenbrooke last week got us revved up. Now, we want to see what we can do against some of the top teams in the country."
Rounding out the top five after the opening round today were No. 6 Oklahoma State (297), New Mexico State (299) and No. 5 Texas (300).
Cal junior Ria Quizon leads the individual race by three strokes after tying her own school record of 68. She recorded seven birdies, including down the stretch at holes 16 through 18, to sit at four-under-par. South Carolina's Kristy McPherson and USC's Becky Lucidi are tied for second with scores of 71.
Cal sophomore Anna Temple also fired a 71, but her score doesn't count towards the team score as she is competing as an individual. The 71 was her first collegiate round under par.
Also in the top 10 for Cal were sophomore Sarah Huarte in a tie for fifth with a 72 and senior Anne Walker in a tie for ninth at 73. Junior Vikki Laing stands in a tie for 33rd with a 76, and sophomore Claire Dury struggled with a round of 82 (tied for 65th).
Second round action begins at 8 a.m. Tuesday.
