BERKELEY - Powered by home runs from sophomore catcher Chadd Krist and freshman third baseman Tony Renda, and steady pitching from freshman left-hander Justin Jones (9-3), the No. 20-ranked Cal baseball team won the second game of the three-game series versus Oregon State, 14-4, Saturday (May 1) at Evans Diamond. The Golden Bears improved to 25-15 overall and 10-7 in the conference. The Beavers dropped to 21-16 and 4-10 in league play. Cal had won the first game of the series, 11-3, on Friday.
Freshman standout Jones earned his ninth win of the season by throwing 7.0 innings with eight hits, four runs, two walks and two strikeouts. He had yielded three runs to the Beavers in the top of the third inning on Andrew Susac's RBI double, followed by Tyler Smith's two-run double to give OSU a 3-0 lead, and gave up another run to the Beavers in the fifth inning on Travis Andrew's RBI single.
But Jones was able to render OSU scoreless the rest of the way while Cal's offense mounted its comeback. Jones' nine wins is the most for a Bear since David Cash tallied 10 wins in 2001.
Cal came back from a 3-0 deficit with three runs in the fourth inning on sophomore center fielder Chad Bunting's sacrifice fly and sophomore right fielder Danny Oh's two-run single through the right side of the infield. After the Beavers had scored their run in the top of the fourth inning, the Bears tied the contest, 4-4, on Renda homer with one out in the bottom of the fifth.
From that point on, Cal continued to score runs, tallying four runs in the sixth inning and six runs in the seventh inning. Sophomore shortstop Marcus Semien, Renda and junior second baseman Brian Guinn had RBI singles in the sixth, and Krist notched a sacrifice fly. The big hits in the seventh inning were Guinn's two-run single to center field, a two-run RBI single by junior first baseman Mark Canha and Krist's two-run homer (team-leading ninth of the year).
Guinn finished with three hits on the day; while Renda, Krist, Oh and Semien had two hits apiece. Guinn also had three hits against the Beavers on Friday.
Cal will next host Oregon State in the third game of the three-game Pac-10 series, Sunday, May 2 at 1 p.m. at Evans Diamond.
Oregon State: None.
Cal: Renda, solo home run in the fifth inning. Krist, two-run homer in the seventh inning.
