Head Coach Joanne Boyle
"Just happy to get a win and finally kind of end that streak. And get back on a positive note and a little bit of a roll. It is better to come into practice on Monday with a good game under our belts, so I am excited about that."
"There was a stretch in the second half where we went on a huge run. [Rachelle Federico] and Mikayla knocking down some shots really helped us a lot. Mooch had a great game and Mikayla came in and gave us some great minutes. We were just getting beat defensively, so we changed defenses up. I think going to the zone helped us a little bit. It felt like, during that run, we were back a little bit."
On the decision to start Rachelle "Mooch" Federico
"We knew they were going to play zone. We haven't been getting off to good starts offensively, not that we did tonight, but the one who was scoring for us was Mooch. That was helpful. It wasn't a senior thing or anything like that. We just needed a new breath, a new something. She is very mature out there. She knows everything we are in. She is one of the people who really does communicate and talk out there. I thought she deserved it and I thought she did a great job."
On what wasn't working in the first half
"We have been struggling to score. And I think we let the game get away from us. We all know that there are other ways to win games. It doesn't have to be scoring. But we still have this lack of urgency defensively. We had miscommunication and breakdowns. We fall apart at one end of the floor when the other isn't going well. I don't know why that happens. I think everyone has to bring more effort and be smarter, and the baskets will fall. We're not giving ourselves any easy baskets because we are watching everyone else score and then walking the ball down the court and putting pressure on our offense. It is just not how we play."
Senior guard Rachelle Federico
On playing well in her first career start on senior night
"It is like my own little Disneyland fairy tale. It is a great feeling. And I have great teammates and a great coaching staff behind me. They have so much confidence in me and it was great to be able to show what we can do and get a W out of it. It was a nice little ending."
"Hearing some of my teammates the last game telling me that I was open and shoot that one! Shoot that one! I think it takes a lot of pressure off other people to score. You hit one and then it stretches the defense out. And then DeNesha has an open on-eon-one touch inside. I think I was really hesitant on the last game. You miss one and then it gets in your head. It is the bad thing about shooters. Just trying to throw that out for tonight. Just keep putting them up there and they are bound to go in. It is the law of averages."
"We had a dialogue the last couple of days. One of the things was believing we can win. I think coming into this game, our mindset was we are going to win regardless of what is going to happen. There was some sort of vibe that we had. Cal basketball was back! We are not going to lose this game. A sense of pride kicked in. For whatever reason it was, we were able to get back to Cal basketball."
