BERKELEY -

The National Golf Coaches Association today announced the 2008-09 student-athlete and coaches awards for Division I Women's Collegiate Golf. Sophomore Pia Halbig capped off her 2008-09 honors with an honorable mention All-American nod from the NGCA.

Halbig, a First Team All-Pac-10 honoree, was the Bears leader this season, setting the sophomore record for stroke average with a 73.0 this season.

Halbig is the ninth Bear to earn post-season NGCA honors and the first since Sofie Andersson and Sophia Sheridan earned honorable mention All-American honors in 2005-06.

"We are really proud of Pia," said Head Coach Nancy McDaniel. "She has had a very solid season. It takes All-Americans like her to get you to the National Championships."

Halbig was the top finisher for the Bears in eight tournaments this season. She had six top-ten finishes including winning the La Quinta tournament, a one-day, 18-hole individual tournament held at the Southern California desert resort at the end of March.

"Pia is also a finalist for NGCA Scholar All-American," Coach McDaniel also pointed out. "She could be our first to make All-American in both categories. She is really paving the way as the type of student athlete we look to mold here at Cal."
