Sunset Canyon Recreation Center, Los Angeles, CA - The No. 3 California women's water polo team (23-4, 11-2 in the MPSF) defeated No. 8 UC Santa Barbara, 5-2, and upset No. 2 Stanford, 5-3, Saturday, in the second day of MPSF Tournament play. Cal advances to the championship match against No. 1 USC tomorrow at 1 p.m.
Against UCSB, the Bears held the Gauchos scoreless in both the second and third quarters. Cal junior Colette Glinkowski led the Bears with three goals to seal the 5-2 victory.
In the afternoon match, the Cardinal trailed the Bears for the entire game. Cal sophomore Beth Irwin and senior Melanie von Hartitzsch both tallied two goals apiece, while goalkeeper Fana Fuqua finished strong with eight saves. Today's match-up was the fourth meeting between Cal and Stanford and the second win for the Bears.
