CALIFORNIA-MURRAY STATE POSTGAME QUOTES November 9, 2009 - Haas Pavilion - Berkeley, CA
California Head Coach Mike Montgomery
Was there a slow start tonight?
No. (It was a) good basketball team. I really felt that Murray State was going to be similar to that and they were. They're a good basketball team. They're a veteran basketball team. They certainly didn't have any fear. Once we got going a little bit, we were able to push a lead. We got up 18 twice, which was pretty good. The thing we would like not to do is give a lead like that back, which we did. They made us work. They did a good job. They had a good game plan. They were very well prepared.
What allowed Murray State to come back in the late stages?
They shot threes. I thought maybe we got a little bit tired. I thought our shot selection got a little bit questionable. They upped their defensive pressure - forced us to the basket and when they did that, we got in kind of tough spots and where we weren't sure what to do so we ended up taking shots we weren't used to taking. Then they got out on the break on us and when they got out on the break they were able to get pretty good open shots and they shot the ball well - they hit some threes in the end.
What can you do offensive about getting off more three-point shots?
The thing that is going to be a little bit of an adjustment for us is that people are not going to be surprised with Patrick and Jerome in terms of their ability to shoot. They're just going to say "Hey, just don't ever leave them. Don't do anything," and that's not something we faced last year. People played us regular and now all of a sudden these guys are two all-conference picks. People know about them and like any team does, you're going to go after other people's best players and most highly touted players and you're going to do everything you can to take them out.
Murray State Head Coach Billy Kennedy
On overall play of game:
"Foul trouble really hurt us a lot in the first half. We had to play some guys more than we probably will. We had a lot of freshmen in there for a lot of the first half. I'm very pleased that our guys didn't fold. We came back and fought and did some good things against a very good basketball team. A couple times, as a team, we didn't block out or get the big rebound. They shot 32 free throws and they are a good free throw team."
"We had way too many turnovers. It seemed like we just slipped a lot; like we didn't have good footing. I bet you that 13 of the 17 turnovers were unforced. We were just going too fast. Some of that was first-game jitters. One of our goals was to have 12 turnovers or less and that was a goal we didn't get.
On the final eight minutes of the game:
We had some great opportunities. We had an opportunity that we missed with the free throw violation. I couldn't see who it was. Hopefully, it wasn't a senior. The free throw violation, the [Cal's] offensive rebound at the end, some freshmen backed off a little bit when they should have been pressuring: all were mistakes against a very good team that you can't make.
On the play of B.J. Jenkins:
B.J. had a really great game. He really played well in his first game after having not played for a year. He did some good things for us. He did a good job defensively.
