FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. - Former Cal wide receiver Michael Calvin has agreed to terms on an undrafted free agent contract with the Atlanta Falcons. After being injured for much of his Cal career, Calvin ran an eye-opening time of 4.32 in the 40-yard dash at Cal's 2012 Pro Day that was faster than any player at the 2012 NFL Combine. He added impressive marks in the broad jump (11' 1") and vertical jump (40.5") that would have tied for the best and tied for the fourth-best at the combine, respectively.
Calvin played in 37 games with 10 starts at Cal from 2008-11, totaling 42 receptions for 528 receiving yards and one touchdown catch.
Calvin had his most productive collegiate season as a senior when he posted career highs of 20 receptions, 269 receiving yards and one touchdown catch. He also had at least one catch in 10 of the career-high-tying 12 games he played in with six starts. His touchdown came on a 19-yard touchdown reception from Zach Maynard against Oregon State. Calvin also had the longest catch of his career for 38 yards on his only grab at UCLA.
He also played in a career-high-tying 12 games as a junior with three starts, contributing 13 receptions and 147 receiving yards.
Calvin played in 10 games off the bench as a sophomore, making one catch for nine yards.
As a rookie, he played in four of the first five games off the bench and made eight catches for 103 yards, including career highs of five catches and 69 receiving yards at Maryland before his promising freshman season was cut short due to injury.
Six former Cal players were selected in the 2012 NFL Draft that concluded Saturday including second-round picks in offensive lineman Mitchell Schwartz (Cleveland Browns - No. 37 overall) and linebacker Mychal Kendricks (Philadelphia Eagles - No. 46 overall), third-round punter Bryan Anger (Jacksonville Jaguars - No. 70 overall), fifth-round wide receiver Marvin Jones (Cincinnati Bengals - No. 166 overall), and seventh round choices in defensive back D.J. Campbell (Carolina Panthers - No. 216 overall) and defensive lineman Trevor Guyton (Minnesota Vikings, No. 219 overall).
Calvin is one of an additional four former Cal players to have been announced by NFL teams to have agreed to terms on an undrafted free agent contract after the draft. Safety Sean Cattouse (San Diego Chargers), offensive lineman Justin Cheadle (Kansas City Chiefs) and tight end Anthony Miller (Denver Broncos) have also agreed to terms.
Additional announcements of former Cal players agreeing to terms on undrafted free agent contracts are expected soon but will not be made until after official announcements by the NFL team.
