ATHENS, Ga. - Cal senior Raquel Kops-Jones, seeded No. 1 in this year's NCAA singles championships, defeated Michigan's Michelle DaCosta, 6-3, 7-5, in the second round today at the 2004 NCAA Women's Tennis Singles Championships in Athens, Ga. With the victory, Kops-Jones advances to the Round of 16 and will play BYU's Barbara Zahnova tomorrow at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex to decide who will move forward into the quarterfinals. Zahnova defeated Northwestern's Jessica Rush, 6-2, 3-6, 6-0, to advance to tomorrow's match.

Kops-Jones, the No. 1 ranked player in collegiate tennis, improves to 30-7 overall in singles competition this season.

"I didn't play so well. (DaCosta's) game is tough to play, but I was tough enough to pull it out," said Kops-Jones. "She made me hit five volleys before I could get a point, but I needed confidence in volleys, so that was good and I feel good now. And I'm feeling pretty good about my serve."

With temperatures soaring into the nineties, Kops-Jones added, "I felt a little heavy this morning. The more I'm out here, the better I feel. It's not too overwhelming, though."

Later in the day, the doubles team of Kops-Jones and Jieun Jacobs, seeded No. 2 in the 32-team field, was upset by Marshall's Jessica Johnson and Ashley Kroh, 6-4, 6-3. Surprisingly, seeds No. 1 through No. 4 all lost on the first day of doubles competition. The doubles team of Johnson and Kroh, ranked No. 32 in the nation, improves to 25-2 for the season. Kops-Jones and Jacobs, ranked No. 7 in the nation, finishes the season with an 18-7 record overall. Last year, Kops-Jones and former Golden Bear Christina Fusano won the NCAA doubles championship.
