Cal Baseball Loses, 7-4, at No. 9 Rice

HOUSTON, TEXAS -

The University of California baseball team was neck-to-neck with No. 9-ranked Rice until the host Owls broke a 4-4 tie with three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning on the way to a 7-4 win in the final game of a four-game series Sunday, March 14 at Reckling Park in Houston. The Golden Bears ended the series, 2-2, with highly-ranked Rice, winning the first two games, 8-6 and 6-4, before falling 26-11 and 7-4 in games three and four. Cal drops to 9-5 overall and the Owls improve to 10-7.

Rice scored its three runs in the seventh on a sacrifice fly and a pair of wild pitches off Bears' freshman left-hander Joe Kurrasch.

Junior first baseman Mark Canha was 2-for-4 on the day and gave the Bears the first run of the game with an RBI single in the first inning. Rice came back with single runs in the second and third innings of Cal junior right-hander Kevin Miller (1-2, 6.0 innings, eight hits, seven runs, five walks, three strikeouts).

The Bears added two runs in the fourth inning on a pair of sacrifice flys by freshman third baseman Tony Renda and freshman right fielder Jimmy Bosco off Rice starter Boogie Anagnostou (6.1 innings, seven hits, four runs, one walk, one strikeout) to take a 3-2 lead.

Rice regained the lead, 4-3, with two runs in the fifth inning, but Cal was able to tie it, 4-4, with a run in the top of the seventh on an RBI double by sophomore shortstop Marcus Semien, scoring Bosco who had led-off the inning with a triple.

Semien finished the day 2-for-4 with the RBI double, while Bosco was 2-for-3 with a triple and RBI.

The Bears next return home to face another Conference USA squad, Houston, Wednesday, March 17 at 2:30 p.m. at Evans Diamond. Cal then travels to Cal Poly for a three-game series, beginning Friday, March 19 at 6 p.m. in San Luis Obispo.
