STANFORD, Calif. - No. 3-ranked California carded a 54-hole school record of 868 to place second Saturday at the NCAA West Regional at Stanford Golf Course. With the Golden Bears second straight runner-up finish, they earned one of eight bids from the regional to the NCAA Championships.

No. 2-ranked UCLA claimed the team title with a score of minus-three 861. Cal, which began the day only four shots off the pace, equaled yesterday's total of 289, while the Bruins fired a 286. Host-Stanford finished third at 883, followed by Washington (892) and Georgia (900). Also advancing to nationals were Ohio State (901), Arizona State (908) and Texas (913). The Longhorns won a playoff with Washington State and Oregon for the final spot.

UCLA's Hannah Jun took top honors at seven-under-par 209, two shots ahead of Ohio State's Allison Hanna. Cal senior Anna Temple tallied a career-best score of 214 to tie the Bruins' Charlotte Mayorkas for third place. Temple, a Berkeley product, capped her best collegiate showing with a one-under 71.

Cal senior Sarah Huarte and sophomore Sophia Sheridan placed sixth (216) and tied for eighth (218), respectively. Huarte notched an eagle on the par 5 seventh hole, propelling her to a round of 72. Sheridan capped the tournament with four birdies and no bogeys on the final seven holes, including three consecutive birdies on holes 16 through 18 to finish with a 71.

Bears sophomore Sofie Andersson tied for 11th with a career-best 220 after shooting a 75 today. Senior Claire Dury tied for 76th at 237, carding a 78 over the final 18 holes. Each Cal golfer had at least two sub-par holes today.

In the fall at the Stanford Intercollegiate, Cal set its previous 54-hole standard of 869 but grabbed fourth.

The 24-team NCAA Championships will be staged May 18-21 at the Grand National Lake Golf Course in Opelika, Ala. Eight teams also advanced to nationals from the East and Central Regionals.
