ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -
Cal head coach Mike Montgomery:
Overall thoughts on the game:
I was really proud of the kids' effort in terms of being ready to play. We didn't have a lot of energy and it's not a great place to not have a lot of energy. I thought we competed well. It came down to really, we were up by six late playing pretty well and, in that point of time, we needed to seal the deal.
On New Mexico's gameplan:
Steve (Alford) caused us some match-up problems in the first half with going small. Maybe they got in foul trouble and that's all he could do. That caused us problems. We didn't have anyone to guard.
On the matchups:
We were concerned about the match-up with (Darington) Hobson and (Roman) Martinez to start with. I thought we did a pretty good job on Martinez early, but then he hits a huge shot late coming off that little flare they run.
New Mexico head coach Steve Alford:
On the win:
Well, obviously a huge win for our team and our program. A lot has been built up for this game because of having a nationally ranked BCS team in our building, which hasn't happened in a while. I thought both teams fought hard. It had to have been an exciting game to watch from a fans' standpoint, and I think that's what our fans are being treated to - our team playing hard. They play unselfishly, and for a very young group, they find ways of winning.
On holding off Cal:
There was probably two different times in the game where I thought Cal was maybe one or two possessions away from sneaking away. Neither team ever had a double digit lead, and I think the crowd maybe helped us pick up a defensive stop, or a key basket, especially within the last five minutes.
