No. 5 California Sweeps Sunday Slate

BERKELEY - The No. 5 California women's water polo team overpowered Brown, 14-3, and sunk No. 14 Hartwick, 14-7, in nonconference match-ups Sunday at Spieker Aquatics Complex. With the two victories, the Golden Bears improve to 14-7.

In the morning game, senior defender Katya Eadington won the opening sprint and got the Bears on the board with a skip shot, 2:40 minutes into the first period. One minute later, senior defender Molly Hayes put one through on a fast break. Sophomore two-meter Grace Reynolds closed out the period with a goal off an assist from sophomore defender Erin Scully, giving Cal a 3-0 first quarter lead.

Junior two-meter Melissa Wheeler started the second stanza on a high note for the Bears with a goal and sophomore defender Meghan Corso was behind her with a goal of her own. Brown Bear junior two-meter defender Rory Stanton scored Brown's first points of the game with a skip shot and sophomore driver Lauren Presant scored after a turn over, to bring the Brown Bears within three, 5-2, at the end of the second quarter.

Junior two-meter defender Paige Lorenz notched the first goal of the second half to kick start an 8-0 scoring run for the Golden Bears. Eadington grabbed her second score of the game off an assist from sophomore utility Darby Anderson and Corso scored again thanks to an assists from sophomore utility Stephanie Schnugg. Despite being triple-teamed in front of the goal, sophomore utility Camille Hewko scored after a pass from Corso. Hewko later dished it out to Anderson, who scored with four seconds to play in the third quarter to give Cal a 10-2 advantage.

The Golden Bears dominated the fourth period with goals from Lorenz, freshmen Laura Wood and Kirsten Auker. Presant scored one last goal for Brown with 18 seconds remaining in regulation. Cal freshman two-meter defender Coral Kemp scored her first goal at Cal in the last five seconds of the game to close out the match. Cal senior goalie Heather Stuart had seven saves while junior keeper Lauren Burke grabbed five and Brown goalie Stephanie Laing had nine.

In the second game of the day for Cal, neither team scored for the first four minutes until Lorenz skipped in a goal on Reynolds pass. Anderson and Hayes each scored on fast breaks off cross-pool passes from Stuart.

Down by three at the start of the second stanza, Hartwick scored its first goal off a backhand shot from senior center Megan Dahl-Smith. Reynolds responded immediately with a goal on Cal's next possession. Reynolds scored her second goal of the game and third of the day at the 4:06 mark off a pass from Anderson to distance the Bears, 5-1. Corso converted a five-meter penalty shot drawn by Hewko and followed it with a powerful shot on goal to bring the score to 7-1 with 2:01 to play. Stephanie Schnugg scored off a Hewko assist to send the Bears into halftime with a 9-1 lead.

Hartwick won the sprint to open the third quarter but Cal scored first, thanks to goal from Hayes off an Erin Scully assist. The Hawks answered on their side of the pool with a goal by senior driver Ellen Sevigny. Hewko amassed her second goal Sunday to increase Cal's lead to 11-2. Sophomore utility Christina Evans scored for Hartwick with a second-chance goal and Dahl-Smith tipped in a shot to inch the Hawks to 11-4 at the end of three quarters of play.

Forty seconds into the fourth period, Hayes intercepted a Hawk pass and passed to Reynolds, who scored with a no-look shot on goal. Lorenz scored on a last-second slip shot before Hartwick scored on a five-meter penalty shot from senior utility Kaitlin Leonard. Sophomore defender Erika Hanson went around a defender and the Hawk keeper to score her first goal of the weekend. The teams each tacked on one more goal - Hartwick's from Dahl-Smith and Cal's from Hayes - to bring the final score to 14-7.
