Golden Bears Prepare for Alister MacKenzie Invitational

BERKELEY, CALIF. - The University of California men's golf team will host the fourth annual Alister MacKenzie Invitational this Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 10-11, at The Meadow Club in Fairfax, Calif. The Alister MacKenzie Invitational is a 54-hole tournament, with 36 holes played on Monday and 18 holes on Tuesday. The Meadow Club course, founded in 1927, measures 6,606 yards and is a par-71.

Tee times start at 7:20 a.m. on Monday and 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday. A practice round will be held Sunday. Results of the Alister MacKenzie Invitational will be available on the Cal men's golf page on www.calbears.com.

The field for this year's event includes some of the nation's best collegiate golf teams. Joining Cal at this 16-team event will be Cal Poly, Fresno State, Hawaii, Kansas State, Michigan, Oregon, Oregon State, Penn State, Purdue, San Francisco, San Jose State, Stanford, UC Irvine, Washington State and Wichita State.

The Bears, the 2004 NCAA champions, placed third at last year's tournament, trailing only Oregon State and Purdue. Cal shot rounds of 281, 288 and 287 to conclude the tournament at 856. Oregon State captured the third annual Alister MacKenzie Invitational with a score of 848 (282, 283, 283). Purdue was second in the team standings with an 855 (288, 280, 287), Northwestern was fourth at 858 (282, 283, 293) and Kansas State was fifth at 859 (292, 280, 287). Purdue's Bobby Bennett and Northwestern's Dillion Dougherty were the individual champions, shooting six-under 207. Cal was the team champion in 2003 (833, -19) and Fresno State won the inaugural Alister MacKenzie Invitational in 2002 (841, -11).

The Meadow Club will be the site of the 2008 Pac-10 Men's Golf Championship, Apr. 27-30, 2008.

The 2005-06 Cal men's golf team will be led by junior Michael Wilson, who redshirted during the 2004-05 season after being named the 2002-03 Pac-10 Freshman of the Year and a member of Cal's national championship squad in 2004. Cal is coached by Steve Desimone, Golfweek's 2003-04 College Coach of the Year, who is in his 27th season directing the Bears' men's golf program.
