BERKELEY, CA - The No. 4 ranked California men's water polo team (14-8, 5-3) defeated No. 7 ranked Stanford (11-11, 2-6), 8-5, Saturday at Spieker Aquatics Complex in the annual Big Splash.
The Bears were led by three goals from senior driver Eldad Hazor. Senior Joe Kaiser and freshman Attila Banhidy added two goals apiece while senior two-meter man Jerry Smith also scored for Cal. Stanford was paced by junior Onno Koelman and sophomore Peter Hudnut, both of whom notched two goals.
Hazor opened up the match with two quick goals before Stanford rallied back behind two goals from Onno Koelman to tie the match at 2-2 towards the end of the first quarter. After Cal and Stanford traded goals in the second quarter, Jerry Smith put the Bears up one with 3:10 left in the half. Stanford, however, had an opportunity to tie the match before the half with a player advantage on offence. Bernstein's save at the buzzer brought the first half to a close with Cal up a goal 4-3.
The Cardinal wouldn't let up as Stanford traded goals with Cal in the third quarter to bring them within one, at 5-4. The fourth quarter belonged Cal, though, as the Bears rallied behind goals from Joe Kaiser, Hazor, and Banhidy to put the Bears up 8-4. Peter Hudnut's lob shot with 32 seconds left in the match found the back of the cage for the Cardinal, however, the Bears dominance in the fourth quarter kept a victory out of reach for Stanford.
