BERKELEY, Calif. - California freshman center Devanei Hampton has been named the U.S. Bank Pac-10 Women's Basketball Player of the Week for Dec. 26-Jan. 1, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Hampton, a native of Oakland, Calif., averaged 20.5 points, 12 rebounds, three assists and 1.5 steals in two games as the Bears defeated UCLA and USC, their first sweep of the LA schools since 2000-01 and the first sweep in Berkeley since 1992-93. On the week, she shot 41.7 percent from the field (15-of-36), 50.0 percent from beyond the arc (1-of-2) and 52.6 percent (10-of-19) from the foul line.
In the 65-58 win over UCLA on Fri., Dec. 30, Hampton recorded her third career double-double in the last nine games with 20 points and a career-high 18 rebounds. She had 10 points and 11 rebounds at halftime. The 18 rebounds were the most by a Cal player since Shavaki Jackson hauled in 20 March 9, 2000, vs. Arizona State. After UCLA closed to within 46-42 with 6:04 left in the game, Hampton answered with two critical jumpers to extend the Bears advantage to 50-42.
In Cal's 73-68 triumph over USC on Sun., Jan. 1, Hampton had another strong outing, notching 21 points and six rebounds. USC trailed only 58-56 with 4:25 left in the game before Hampton again answered with two straight baskets to help the Bears regain control of the game.
California (11-3 overall, 3-1 Pac-10) will play at Oregon on Thurs., Jan. 5, followed up with a Sat., Jan. 7 game against Oregon State, televised on FSN.
The Player of the Week honor is the first for Hampton and the 22nd all-time selection for California.
