Pacific Tigers Invitational Results

STOCKTON, Calif. - Numerous Golden Bears won in singles and doubles on the first day of the Pacific Tigers Invitational on Saturday at Pacific and the Oak Park Tennis Center, with sophomore Andrew Scholnick reaching the semifinals of the black singles draw, freshman Jordan Smith advancing to the semifinals of the white singles draw and second-seeded Campbell Johnson moving onto the quarterfinals of the orange draw among them.

After a first-round bye, Johnson defeated Cal Poly's Jurgen DeJager, 6-2, 6-2. The junior will face Denis Lin of Saint Mary's at 12:15 p.m. on Saturday in the next round. In the black draw, Scholnick topped Fresno State's Sai Kartik, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3, and then beat George Horowitz of UC Davis, 6-2, 6-3, to reach Saturday's 2:15 p.m. semifinal against Cal Poly's Derek Klein.

In the first round of the black draw, Klein upended Cal freshman Wyatt Houghton, 7-6 (5), 6-7 (4), 7-5. That moved Houghton into the consolation draw, in which he beat Alec Haley of UC Davis, 6-2, 6-4, to set up a semifinal match with Sartik at 2 p.m. on Saturday. Also in the black singles main draw, Cal sophomore Nikhil Jayashankar lost to Kyle Miller of UC Davis, 6-4, 6-2. In the consolation draw, Jayashankar beat Sonoma State's Drexler Dy, 6-1, 6-3, to set up a semifinal with Cal Poly's Jordan Kepler on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.

Smith advanced past Sonoma State's David Hutton, who withdrew with an injury, in the white singles main draw round of 16, and then beat Bryce Purser of Modesto Junior College, 6-1, 6-1, in the quarterfinals. Smith meets Cal Poly's Devin Barber at 1 p.m. on Saturday in the semifinals.

In the orange doubles main draw, Johnson and sophomore Chase Melton beat Cal Poly's Jordan Bridge and Matt Thomson, 8-4, to advance to a quarterfinal match against fourth-seeded Horowitz and Brett Bacharach scheduled for 9 a.m. on Saturday. Also in the orange round of 16, the Cal duo of Scholnick and Houghton fell to USF's Bernardo Saraiva-Nils Skajaa, 8-2. Scholnick-Houghton next plays Pacific's Ben Mirkin-Trevor James in the orange consolation semifinals at 10:15 a.m. on Saturday.

Smith and Jayashankar paired up in the black doubles main draw, beating Sonoma State's Dy-Jimmy Manning, 8-3, in the round of 16 to set up a 9 a.m., Saturday quarterfinal match against Adam Luba-Mitch Thorp of UC Davis.

The three-day tournament ends on Sunday.
