BERKELEY, CA - The University of California baseball team let a 7-4 lead slip away in the top of the ninth inning as UCLA scored nine runs on the way to a 13-10 victory Saturday in Berkeley. Cal goes to 15-22, 4-5 in the Pac-10, while UCLA breaks an eight-game losing streak and improves to 16-22, 2-7 in league. The Bears had defeated the Bruins, 14-12, Thursday and 4-3 Friday.

Cal was unable to complete a sweep of the Bruins when UCLA led-off the top of the ninth with six straight hits off of Bear relievers Brad Steele and Jason Ball, including a grand slam by Eric Reece and a solo home run by Jason Green off of Ball. The Bruins then added four more runs in the ninth inning when Chase Utley hit a grand slam off of Cal's Andrew Sproul to make the score 13-7. The Bears did make a comeback attempt in the bottom of the ninth when shortstop Jason Williams hit his second three-run homer of the day, this time off of UCLA reliever Josh Karp to get within 13-10.

Karp (4-3) ended up being the winning pitcher for the Bruins, going 4.0 innings with five hits, four runs, three walks and four strikeouts. Steele (0-1, 6.0 innings, seven hits, four runs, three walks, three strikeouts) was the loser for Cal after giving up no runs and only three hits from the third through the eighth innings.

Utley (5-for-6, double, grand slam, four RBI), Reece (2-for-6, grand slam, six RBI) and Green (3-for-5, home run, two RBI) were UCLA's top hitters. Xavier Nady, David Sark, Tommy Callen and Williams all had three hits for the Bears. Williams had a career-high six RBI (hit a three-run homer in the second inning) and Callen went 3-for-5 and hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning. The game had an hour and 15 minute rain and hail delay in the top of the fifth inning.

Cal will next travel to Pacific Tuesday, Apr. 6 at 7 p.m., before travelling to USC for a three-game conference series beginning Friday, April 9 at 7 p.m. at Dedeaux Field in Los Angeles.
