Bears Play Well Early at Regional

STANFORD, Calif. - Sophomore Jessica Shu has played solid tennis through the first two rounds of the ITA Women's Northwest Regional. Shu defeated Christine Tilley in the first round, 6-1, 6-0, then came back and downed Chris Martinez, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4.

Five other Bears also made the round of 32 out of a starting bunch of 128. Nicole Havlicek had a first-round bye then upended Saskia Nauenberg. Catherine Lynch defeated Zsofi Fodor after a first-round bye. Jody Scheldt was given a free pass to the second round as well, then had to sweat through a 7-5 first set, before relaxing and putting away Chelsey Thompson, 6-0.

Prize Cal recruit Sasha Podkolzina saw her first action of the year defeating Nora Gaal in the round of 64, 6-2, 6-4.

Rio Del Rosario unfortunately fell in the first round to Catherine Cochrane, 6-0, 7-6, while Kristen Case did not compete in her first-round matchup.
