SANTA BARBARA, CA - The No. 2 ranked University of California women's water polo team (8-1) won its first two matches of the UC Santa Barbara Tournament, defeating UC San Diego B team, 16-1, and San Jose State, 10-3.
Against UC San Diego, 13 different Cal players scored, led by two goals from senior Erin Kelley, junior Colette Glinkowski and redstart freshman Chris Lane. In the San Jose State match, Kelley, Melanie vonHartitzsch and Colette Glinkowski scored two goals apiece.
The Bears will face No. 3 ranked Stanford, who defeated Occidental and UC San Diego A team in the opening rounds, at 11:30 a.m. in the tournament semifinals. If Cal wins its semifinal match, it will play in the championship match at 4:10 p.m. Sunday.
"We played much better as a team than we did earlier in the season," said assistant coach Steve Doten. "We were really composed. We know that Stanford will be a tough match for us because they are a well coached team."
Earlier this season, the Bears defeated then No. 1 ranked Cardinal, 6-3, Feb. 14 in the semifinals of the San Diego Invitational.
